2008 - Honest Jon’s
Here is the 3rd of the Honest Jon’s series! Living is HARD. Although this compilation features mostly African-origin folk songs it also spans over a variety of culture-styles from Caribbean and gypsy-esque melodies to minimal tribal vocals/instrumentation. The quality is actually very good for its time (it was recorded in a studio in Wessex) and each song is pretty different. I don’t know, check it out!
Happy New Year, Internet.

2008 - Honest Jon’s
Okay! Sorry for the short delay, but here’s the second of the three Honest Jon’s releases I’m posting. Give Me Love is a fantastic compilation of field recordings from around Iraq that were once stored away in the EMI Hayes Archive. Arabic folk singers and traditional dance music smothered with various styles of sound from around the Middle East. Really cool stuff. Click here to preview.
All righty, one more of these to post and some other goodies.

2008 - Honest Jon’s Records
This is going to be the first of 3 new comps put out by Honest Jon’s I plan on posting. This series is so good I really can’t not post everything. Here’s a collection of recordings from the first half of the 20th century from all around the world that will absolutely blow you away. I can’t express how perfect this comp is; beautiful tones, experimental at times but never straying away to become too improvisational yet still maintaining a melodic form. Like most comps, the majority of artists on here are pretty unknown but there are a few big names like Mighty Sparrow, Joseph Taylor, and Fairuz. There are so many different influences present I don’t see how you couldn’t find something you’d like. I have had that Sam Mayo track, ‘Things Are Worse in Russia’, in my head for weeks. You can support Honest Jon’s here (They still have vinyl in stock!) and preview this here.

1968 - Island Records
Here’s a request I got not too long ago. Improvisational free-jazz feauturing Derek Bailey, John Stevens, Kenny Wheeler, Evan Parker, and Dave Holland. Some of the most concentrated free-jazz I’ve heard in my lifetime. This record is pretty far out there as far as normality goes, but even then it still feels like everything is being held together by some unknown force. Pretty cool ambience, as well. Click here to download.
Can you believe it? I actually updated! I’m sorry it’s been over a month since I’ve actually posted music but it’s hard to maintain a blog with a busy lifestyle. Up next for your ears include a three part Honest Jon’s Records series (Living is Hard, Give Me Love & Sprigs of Time), a Ducktails release, a Soft Shoulder album, and some extra goodies. COME BACK TOMORROW.

Hey guys, sorry for the SEVERE lack of tunes coming from this end of the internet but I’ve been incredibly busy and haven’t had time sit down and post.KIT’s on tour with Deerhoof right now and they were nice enough to stop by my house and play the livingroom inside of it. IT RULED SO HARD. Next week Wet Hair & Peaking Lights are playing my house and then a week or two after THAT A.H. Kraken is also making noise in my living room! Arizona rules right now.
As far as things to upload goes, I started uploading a lot (a whole lot) of Blue Note jazz stuff from vinyl and will start posting that when I can. Mutant-Sounds posted a ton of ICR tapes recently and I highly suggest checking those out as they are pretty neat. Keep checking back here!

2008 - Rob’s House Records
Hunx from Gravy Train!!!! is back with his second 7″ of the year in YOU DON’T LIKE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL, two catchy fun anthems wrapped in pop punk, soaked in homoeroticism and topped off with a little trash talk. This sounds exactly like a Nobunny clone, though the songs are really good. OH, not to mention the scratch off cover that has the whole world hesistant to find out what’s behind the grey box of potential full monty. I want more of this stuff! Click here to download!

2008 - Tzadik
I haven’t posted a jazz album in a while so here’s this bad boy. I mean, first of all, check out that lineup! A sax hero, a bass connoisseur and a percussion legend making weird sounds. Crazy free-jazz in the year two-thousand and eight! The vocals throughout the album (notably on track two) are a lot of fun. It’s nothing totally essential but it’s definitely worth a listen. Check it out!

2007 - Bo’Weavil
Remember this gem from last year? I completely forgot about it until about a week ago. Really beautiful, minimal, and somewhat composed yet improvised guitar work. The last track is like a Joanna Newsom song without all the annoying vocals. Robbie Basho eat yr heart out. SUPPORT THIS GUY. Click here to download.
Yeah, I completely forgot to post yesterday. I might post something else tonight. All the things I want to post seem/feel like they’re being covered by every other blog out there (even if they aren’t) so I don’t know.

2008 - Eclipse Records
Okay, so I was going to post one of the new James Ferraro releases (Marble Surf) because I can’t stop listening to it, but I don’t want to seem like a dick so lets give credit where credit is due: The guy over at Take Your Shoes Off has uploaded all 6 James Ferraro cd-rs and they’re all really awesome. The Skaters release I’m posting now is super droney, noisey, and well you know…The Skaters. No cool samples or anything but the last track is interesting enough. This is no where near as good as some of those James Ferraro cd-rs so go get those too! Click here to download.
Expect an album upload tomorrow, and the next day, and hopefully the next day and so forth.

2008 - Castle Face
Last night I went to see Thee Oh Sees and Sic Alps play at the Trunk Space. Little did I know that this guy would practically steal the show. I really don’t even know where to begin in explaining how great this. Grungy, angsty, SUPER CATCHY garage rock from San Francisco. Did I mention he also plays drums with his feet while strumming his guitar and singing along? Well he does and he’s really good at it. This album even has a really rad Ramones cover song! My only beef is that the album doesn’t have Ty’s super catchy song “IT” on it, but I guess I’ll just have to wait till his next release. Ty Segall is one rad, talented dude. SUPPORT HIM HERE (BUY HIS STUFF! GET THIS LP!). Preview this here. I don’t know how anyone could dislike this.
